This office is responsible for the enforcement of the Property Maintenance Code adopted by the City of Hillsdale. We can be reached by telephone at (517) 437-6455, by fax at (517) 437-6448, or by emailing the Code Enforcement Office.

Common citizen complaints received by our office include:

  • Dilapidated structures
  • Excessive accumulation of trash and debris within a property
  • Insufficient maintenance of basic living conditions
  • Insufficient maintenance of the exterior of structure or property
  • Snow accumulation on sidewalks
  • Improper placement of signage, including Yard Sale signs
  • Tall grass and weeds
  • Brush and grass clippings placed within the public Right of Way
  • Refrigerators stored on the exterior of the structure
  • Similar property maintenance-related issues

Use and Occupancy Permits

Use and Occupancy Permits are required for any occupied structure in the City of Hillsdale under the Hillsdale Municipal Code of Ordinances, Chapter 6, Article II. Application must be made to the Code Enforcement office and an approved inspection must be completed under the Property Maintenance Code prior to issuance of the permit. Permits are valid until there is a change of occupants that occurs two years or more following the issuance of the permit. Information regarding rights of tenants and landlords.
